Stone Feature Walls & Fireplace Surrounds Turn a wall into a statement.

Book-matched slabs and fireplace surrounds, laid out panel by panel so the veining reads as one continuous pattern across the room.

Living room with a book-matched stone fireplace feature wall

Overview

The stone does the design work.

A full-slab feature wall is the project where the material itself is the design — a fireplace surround, a living-room accent wall, or a bar backdrop built from large-format slabs rather than tile. The result depends almost entirely on how the panels are laid out against each other before anything is cut.

We lay out book-matched panels — mirrored slices from the same block, arranged so the veining folds outward from the seam like an open book — digitally before fabrication, so you can see how the pattern will read on your actual wall before it's committed to stone.

For layout, lighting and fireplace details, see our full-slab feature wall design guide.

Design & Fabrication

Things worth planning for.

Book-matching

Panels are cut from consecutive slices of the same block and laid out digitally first, so the mirrored veining is confirmed before any material is committed.

Panel size & seam count

Wall height and width determine how many panels a feature wall needs — fewer, larger panels mean fewer seams, which we plan for during templating.

Fireplace clearances

Fireplace surrounds are templated to the specific unit and its manufacturer clearances, so the stone is cut with the correct heat-safe gap built in.

Suitable Materials

Exotic marble and Taj Mahal quartzite are the materials most often chosen for feature walls because of their natural veining, which is what book-matching is built to showcase. Engineered quartz and sintered stone/porcelain are available where a more consistent, large-format look is preferred.

FAQs

Feature wall questions.

What does 'book-matched' actually mean?

It means two adjoining panels are cut from consecutive slices of the same block and flipped like the pages of a book, so their veining mirrors across the seam instead of repeating or clashing.

Can you build a feature wall around an existing fireplace?

Yes. We laser-template the fireplace opening and surrounding wall directly, and cut the surround to the unit's required clearances.

Which materials show book-matching best?

Exotic marble and Taj Mahal quartzite have the strongest natural veining, which is what makes book-matched panels visually striking. We can bring slab samples so you can see the pattern before committing.

What book-matched patterns and fireplace details can you create?

Book-matched slabs can be laid out in V-shaped, diamond, or continuous wave patterns for feature walls, foyers, and primary bedrooms. We also fabricate floor-to-ceiling fireplace surrounds, hearths, and floating stone mantels.
